News Cameron County DA Announces Plans to Get Tough on Illegal Gambling Sites Cameron County, Texas District Attorney Armando Villalobos announced yesterday that he plans to use new, stronger tactics against illegal Casino gambling sites. There are more than 35 illegal video casino gambling sites in operation throughout Cameron County. These establishments are illegal under state law because they pay out more than 10 times to value of a bid. Villalobos warned that, although the county has traditionally gone after only the owners and operators of the casino gambling sites, it will now begin to target customers as well. Being caught playing at one of the illegal gambling sites, said Villalobos, will have dramatic consequences. “We want to warn the public that they will be arrested on a Class C misdemeanor gambling charge,” Villalobos said. “We will have a mobile court available on the spot so we can arrest and take them in vans or buses … not cite them.” Villalobos also said that landlords of gambling sites will not be protected from prosecution. They may even be subject to seizures of their property by the county. Villalobos’ goal is to affect the gambling sites’ bottom lines, thereby forcing them out of business completely.
